How to Choose the Right BJJ Gym in San Roque

By James Holman, Black Belt Instructor

Campo de Gibraltar has more martial arts options than ever, which is great for the sport but can make choosing a gym confusing. Here's what we'd tell a friend to actually look for before signing up anywhere — including here at Submission Labs.

1. Instructor Credentials You Can Verify

Ask who is actually teaching the class, what rank they hold, and under which lineage. A legitimate instructor should be able to point to a verifiable belt history. Our head instructor, James Holman, is an IBJJF Black Belt under Gordo Jiu-Jitsu Europe, and his credentials are peer-reviewed and verified on BeltChecker.com.

2. Class Structure Appropriate to Your Level

A good gym separates beginners from advanced competitors, and kids from adults. Look for a clear weekly schedule with dedicated Gi, No-Gi, MMA and kids classes rather than one generic session for everyone.

  • Are there beginner-friendly fundamentals classes?
  • Is there a distinct, age-appropriate kids program?
  • Are advanced/competition classes gated behind rank or experience?

3. Gym Culture Over Gym Marketing

The best way to judge a gym's culture is to train there, not just read the website. Visit during a class, watch how higher belts treat newer students, and ask about the gym's approach to injuries, ego, and competition. A no-contract policy — like ours — is also a good signal: it means the gym is confident you'll want to stay because you like training there, not because you're locked into a contract.

4. Facilities and Safety

Check the mats are clean and well-maintained, that there's enough space to avoid overcrowding during live rolling, and that basic first aid is available. As a former firefighter and EMT, our head instructor takes gym safety seriously — it's built into how classes are run.

5. Try Before You Commit

Any legitimate gym should let you try a class for free before asking you to sign up. If a gym pressures you into a long-term contract before you've set foot on the mats, treat that as a red flag.
