New students at Submission Labs often aren't sure whether to sign up for BJJ or MMA. Both are demanding, both will get you in serious shape, but they train different skills for different goals. Here's how we'd break it down.
What is BJJ?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling art focused entirely on the ground: takedowns, positional control, and submissions like joint locks and chokes. It can be trained in the Gi (traditional kimono) or No-Gi (rashguard and shorts), and it's built around the idea that a smaller, technically skilled person can control and submit a larger, stronger opponent.
What is MMA?
Mixed Martial Arts combines striking (boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai) with grappling (wrestling and BJJ) into one integrated skill set for competition inside a cage or ring. MMA training typically layers striking rounds on top of a grappling base — which is why so many MMA fighters, including at our gym, come up through BJJ first.
Key Differences at a Glance
- Contact: BJJ is grappling-only, so it's lower impact on the body day to day. MMA includes striking, so contact and conditioning demands are higher.
- Competition format: BJJ competitions are decided by points, position, and submission. MMA is decided by knockout, submission, or judges' decision across striking and grappling.
- Learning curve: BJJ has a famously deep technical ceiling — most people spend years just reaching black belt. MMA requires progress across multiple disciplines simultaneously.
Which Should You Start With?
If your goal is fitness, self-defense, or competitive grappling without getting hit, start with BJJ. If your long-term goal is competing in MMA, we'd still recommend building a BJJ foundation first — grappling is where most fights actually end up, and a strong ground game protects you everywhere else. Our MMA program is built on exactly this approach: BJJ and No-Gi grappling form the base, with striking layered in as students progress.
